Keith’s Bio
Keith is one of the few internationally recognized authorit ies
in the field of improvisation, great chunks of which he created, including
improvisation forms that include Theatresports, Maestro Impro, Gorilla
Theatre, and the Life Game. Theatresports is known worldwide, and London’s
Improbable Theatre Co. (directed by Phelim McDermot) recently toured
Great Britain with the Life Game to excellent reviews.
His book Impro, and Impro For Storytellers, have been translated into
many languages.
He worked at London’s Royal Court Theatre for its ten most revolutionary
years (1956-1966), beginning as a reader of plays and ending as an Associate
Director (with William Gaskill).
He has taught at many European Theatre Schools, including six years
at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and each spring for fifteen years
at the Stattensteatre Skole in Copenhagen.
Places where he has taught since November 1998 include San Francisco,
Brisbane, Sydney, Seattle, London, Hong Kong, Austin (Texas), and Tokyo.
He has recently returned from lecturing at the Deuches Institute for
Provocative Therapy, and from teaching “clinic clowns” in
the Bavarian Alps.
He founded the Theatre Machine improvisation group, the International
Theatresports Institute, and was Co-founder of Calgary’s Loose
Moose Theatre.
He is a Professor Emeritus at Calgary University.

What can you expect of a Keith Workshop? Keith’s brief description of
the workshop:
“If you’ve studied with me you’ll know what to expect.
If not then my book ‘Impro’ will
give you some idea.
I’ll teach what I always teach. I try to shape my courses to the
needs of the group.”
Keith’s techniques specialize in releasing an individual’s
potential within the context of group work. Keith’s work enables
people to be more active, spontaneous and flexible. The exercises he
will cover work to free the mind.
Am I a suitable candidate for a Keith Course?
In all Keith’s classes, he likes to have a variety of levels of participants;
he enjoys the diversity and believes it is good for the entire class. It
does not matter if you’ve never even done any improvisation; Keith’s
courses are not only for performers.
It is not uncommon to see groups which
include teachers, Business people, Lawyers, Actors, Psychologists etc…
